Medication Support That Works With Your Therapy, Not Instead of It

Shoreside is adding psychiatric evaluations and medication management — provided by a psychiatric nurse practitioner who works alongside the therapist you already trust.

The Shoreside Difference

Your Therapist and Your Prescriber, Under One Roof

At most practices, your prescriber and your therapist have never spoken. At Shoreside, they're colleagues. With your consent, they compare notes — what's improving, what's not, whether a medication change or a therapy adjustment is the better next move.

And if you're new to Shoreside, you don't need to be in therapy here to see our psychiatric provider. Medication management works on its own, too.

Adult ADHD in Milwaukee

You Shouldn't Need Three Providers to Treat Your ADHD

If you've tried to sort out ADHD as an adult around here, you already know the runaround. One place does the testing. Somewhere else might prescribe — but only if you show up with documentation. Your therapist is a third place entirely. You end up carrying your own records between them, repeating your story at every stop, and waiting months before anyone actually talks with you about medication.

At Shoreside, it's one practice.

Our psychiatric nurse practitioner can evaluate you for ADHD, talk through medication when it's appropriate, and manage it over time — while your therapist works on the parts medication doesn't reach. The systems that never stuck. The piles you keep meaning to deal with. The years of being told you just weren't applying yourself.

A clinical ADHD evaluation with your prescriber — no prior testing or outside paperwork required before we'll see you.
Ongoing medication management, including stimulant medications when they're clinically appropriate.
Your prescriber and your therapist in the same practice, actually talking to each other.
Want the full picture? We do formal evaluations too. If you need documentation for school or workplace accommodations, the question is more complicated than "is this ADHD?", or you simply want a thorough written report before deciding anything — Shoreside offers a formal Adult ADHD Evaluation with Victoria Hagan, MA, LPC: a clinical interview, standardized assessment measures, a feedback appointment, and a written report with recommendations. It's a separate service from medication management, and it's never a toll booth you have to clear before the prescriber will see you. The two work together — an evaluation can hand you straight to the nurse practitioner for a medication conversation, and the prescriber can refer you for an evaluation when a fuller assessment would help.

About medication. Whether medication makes sense for you, and which one, is a clinical decision your prescriber makes with you after a real evaluation — not something any practice can promise in advance. What we can tell you is that the conversation won't be rushed.

What to Expect

What Is a Psychiatric Evaluation?

Your first appointment is a full hour — not a checklist. Our psychiatric nurse practitioner takes time to understand your history, your symptoms, what you've tried before, and what matters to you, then builds a plan together with you.

If medication makes sense, you'll leave with a clear plan and a prescription. If it doesn't, we'll say so — and tell you what we'd suggest instead.

Follow-ups are 15–30 minutes: how you're responding, side effects, adjustments, and coordination with your therapist.

Looking for a Psychiatrist in Milwaukee?

Most people searching for a psychiatrist are looking for one thing: a clinician who can evaluate what is going on and prescribe, adjust and monitor medication. At Shoreside that clinician is a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) — an advanced-practice provider licensed in Wisconsin to diagnose and prescribe psychiatric medication, and the provider most private practices in the Milwaukee area use for medication management.

What tends to be different here is the pace and the coordination. Appointments are unhurried rather than ten-minute med checks, and if you already see a Shoreside therapist, your prescriber and your therapist can talk to each other with your consent instead of you carrying messages between two systems.

What Medication Management Covers

Our prescriber works with adults, adolescents and children on:

  • ADHD — clinical evaluation and medication management, including stimulant and non-stimulant options
  • Anxiety — generalized anxiety, panic, and health or social anxiety
  • Depression — including treatment-resistant presentations and people who have tried medication before without much change
  • Bipolar and mood disorders — mood stabilization and ongoing monitoring
  • OCD — medication alongside exposure-based therapy
  • Trauma and PTSD — medication support alongside EMDR or Brainspotting
  • Perinatal and postpartum mental health — including questions about medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Sleep — when it is tangled up with a mental health picture rather than standing alone

Where We See You

Medication management is available in person at our Milwaukee office on the East Side (1429 N. Prospect Ave), our Whitefish Bay office (4530 N Oakland Ave) and our Glendale office (6213 N Green Bay Ave) — convenient to the East Side, Shorewood, Bayside, Fox Point, Glendale and the wider North Shore — and by secure video for anyone located in Wisconsin.

Psychiatry Alongside Therapy

Medication is one tool, and it works best when someone is also doing the other half of the work. Shoreside offers individual therapy, ADHD therapy, anxiety counseling and depression therapy at the same three offices, and a formal adult ADHD evaluation if you need documentation rather than only treatment. You are welcome to use any one of these on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a Shoreside therapy client to see the psychiatric provider?

No. Medication management is open to anyone — though if you do see a Shoreside therapist, the two can coordinate your care with your consent.

Do I need ADHD testing before I can get medication in Wisconsin?

No. Our psychiatric nurse practitioner completes a clinical ADHD evaluation as part of your first visit, so you don't need outside documentation to be seen. If you want or need a formal evaluation — for accommodations paperwork, a complicated picture, or simply a thorough written report — Shoreside offers an Adult ADHD Evaluation with Victoria Hagan, MA, LPC, and the two providers coordinate with your consent. Neither one is a prerequisite for the other.

Will I definitely be put on medication?

No. An evaluation is an assessment, not a commitment. If medication isn't the right tool for you, we'll tell you that plainly and talk through alternatives.

What's the difference between a therapist and a psychiatric nurse practitioner?

Your therapist works with you on patterns, skills, and processing. A psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced-practice clinician who can evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe medication. Many people benefit most from both, working together.

Do you take insurance for psychiatry?

We're in the process of joining insurance networks for psychiatric services. Share your plan when you join the waitlist and we'll confirm coverage before your first visit. Self-pay is also available ($350 evaluation, $165 follow-up), with superbills and HSA/FSA accepted. Shoreside therapy services remain private pay.

Do you see children and teens?

Yes. Our psychiatric services are available to adults, adolescents, and children, and we coordinate closely with parents and, where helpful, your child's therapist.
