Therapy for College Students

Everyone said these would be the best four years of your life. Nobody mentioned the 2 a.m. panic about your major, the roommate you can't relax around, the friendships that feel like work, or the strange grief of missing home while also not wanting to go back.

If you're barely staying afloat — or afloat but exhausted by the effort — that's not a character flaw. It's the most common story we hear from students. It's also very workable.

What brings students to therapy

  • Academic and career pressure — the GPA spiral, the "what am I doing with my life" question, imposter feelings in a major full of people who seem sure
  • Transitions — first year away, transferring, graduating into a job market with your identity attached
  • Friendships and roommates — making real friends after the orientation-week shuffle, conflict you can't walk away from because you share a bathroom
  • Identity — figuring out who you are when nobody from home is watching, and whether the path you're on was ever actually yours
  • Anxiety and depression showing up for the first time — away from every support you've ever had

How it works around a student schedule

Online sessions anywhere in Wisconsin — from your dorm, apartment, or parked car with headphones — or in person at our Milwaukee office on Prospect Ave. Sessions schedule around classes, not the other way. And it starts with a free 15-minute consult, so you can see whether it's a fit before committing to anything.

If your parents are helping pay: we're private pay with superbills for out-of-network benefits, and the consult costs nothing — a low-stakes way to see if this is worth it. (It usually is. We're biased, but so is the data on early support.)

Who you'd work with

Amanda Lo, MSW, APSW, LCSW, therapist for college students in Milwaukee

Amanda Lo, MSW, APSW, LCSW

College students and academic/career stress are her named specialties, along with identity development and transitions. Person-centered but solution-focused: you'll feel understood, and you'll also leave sessions with something concrete to try. She works with students asking the big question underneath the stress: is there more to me than what I produce?
